For Mykel Kumar, a first timer in the Nepal tattoo convention scene, Nepal Inked is like an open playground. “I don’t expect anything from the convention. I’m going there to tattoo, draw inspiration and interact with the community. All I look forward to is an experience that will enrich me as an artist.”

The 29 year old cartoonist and animator converted to being a tattoo artist when his father handed him tattoo equipment with two weeks in hand to set up his own studio. Thus, came Pumpkin Patch Tattoos to existence in Bangalore. If you’re looking for someone who’ll pour some fun in your ideas and make them look kickass, Mykel is your guy.

Funky and refreshing, Mykel’s work is a lot about conceptualising from scratch, something he does brilliantly well. Mykel’s work begs to differ from the usual scene. His strong lines flow with the body, and the colour work complements the Indian skin tone. In his words, “It’s easy to replicate images and designs but to translate somebody’s thoughts into original work which does not look like it’s off the internet is what tattooing is all about.”

Mykel plans to travel around Nepal after the convention for some inspiration and food for thought. Are you going to see him there?
